Sydney Airport Bay Markers

These signs are used for air traffic control, and to assist aircraft with navigation. They are illuminated with neon tubes and easily read in difficult conditions. They are also very durable, and designed to have a serviceable lifespan of 50 years.

The signs are mounted on masts approximately 12 meters high. They are designed to withstand cyclones. They are also ergonomically designed for servicing, and have a large opening rear panel door that is supported by gas struts (similar to the rear door on a hatch back car).

Although these signs are rugged in construction, the neon tubes on the face are made from fragile glass. To improve on performance, the neon glass is fitted to shock-absorbing mounts, and this will ensure that when they arrive in Sydney they will be still intact and good to go.
